Der dimensionslose numerische Feuerwetterindex (FWI) ist ein sechsstufiger meteorologischer Index auf Basis von Wetterbedingungen, der zur Einschätzung der Brandgefahr verwendet wird.cite-ref-1[1]

Die Entwicklung stammt vom Canadian Forestry Service und wird kategorisiert in 6 Gefahrenklassen:

• Sehr geringe Gefahr: FWI unter 5.2
• Geringe Gefahr: FWI zwischen 5.2 und 11.2
• Mäßige Gefahr: FWI zwischen 11.2 und 21.3
• Hohe Gefahr: FWI zwischen 21.3 und 38.0
• Sehr hohe Gefahr: FWI zwischen 38.0 und 50.0
• Extreme Gefahr: FWI über 50.0

Abgrenzend gibt es noch weitere in Deutschland gebräuchliche Indizes, wie den Grasland-Feuerindex (GLFI), den fünfstufigen Waldbrandindex oder den drei Waldbrandrisikostufen (Waldbrandgefahrenklassen) der EU.
